The 2010 Yorkshire and Humber region Civic Societies Week awards were made at Selby Town Hall on Saturday 6th November 2010. Selby Civic Society were the outright winners and were presented with the Peter Spawforth Trophy, a cheque for £250 and a certificate.
Selby's entry, which centred around opening a temporary town museum, was judged to be the best effort in a fiercely competitive field, where they were up against previous winners such as Scarborough and Skipton in Craven and well resourced societies such as Huddersfield, Ripon and Wakefield. Selby triumphed by staging events which were innovative, popular, had a good public image and impact and which hopefully will have a long term benefit.
Peter Cooper, chairman of YHACS said: 'The event at Selby was a great success with over 60 attendees from 25 societies from all parts of the region coming to see Selby win the award. The societies also enjoyed a talk about 'The Big Society' and the chance to meet kindred spirits. Our hosts, Selby Civic Society, made us very welcome at Selby Town Hall, a splendid venue.'
